She opened her eyes slowly, not yet wanting to be free from slumber’s lulling grip. As her eyelids slid back - each one taking just a moment too long - a startling pair of hazels that kept staring right on back at her was revealed. With a drowsy slur, those eyes seemed to tell her, “Welcome to the world, beautiful.”
And she truly felt the part; for that unspoken expression of acquiescence unraveled all the sadness of her colorless world. From the moment those eyelids had peeled back, the black and white she once knew had become a blinding spectrum of color.
Before her mind could grasp the affection, her two lips had formed into a sort of grin, a fraction of it reticent and the rest convivial. Each breath, every curtain’s closing, and all of those insignificant movements seemed to last an eternity in that tender gaze, and she willed them to cease, to allow her an instant of peace in this heaven where her smile could be sincere.
Yet those tired eyes forced that ever-present shadow down around her, though the sensation that filled her aching bones was not at all sinister. The warmth of a hand caressing a cheek…
When her eyelids slid back again - each one taking just a moment too long - an monochrome emptiness stared right on back; her only heaven, a lonely dream, was no more.
| A kiss of modern disguise, cloaked in unsightly decay. A line drawn, impassable, an object of subtle dismay. Electrifying as these lips brush against a sandy grain - never to love, to embrace, the tears among the rain. |
